Emo is Dead

That’s quite the pretentious fucking moniker, isn’t it? It’s almost too big for this band. Who by the way seem to have all the good intentions, and even realize a couple of mid-size accomplishments through consistent songwriting, but who unfortunately fall short on the latter half of this recording. It doesn’t help that we are only talking about an EP, and we all know that if you can’t make five good songs, then you are in trouble. You are in real big trouble.  First thing that popped into mind was; The Mars Volta. Now, to simply be associated with them by merit of your own songwriting, should serve as a compliment. The first cut (“A Silent Fiction”) is actually excellent. Three minutes and thirty-two seconds of promise; elaborate guitars that fall under all the ‘post-something’ tags, as long as they serve to describe the word heavy and progressive. It is clear where these young Swiss men are getting their inspiration from but with songs this solid who am I to argue?

Emo is Dead, as a title, it’s fucking great. It’s another bit of a pretentious statement, as it directly alleges that Pure Soundart may have had something to do with the sub-genre’s demise. But with tracks as lazy and uninspired as “Pretty Demon Create” these boys aren’t going to signify nothing more than a light and buffable scratch. Yes, only three songs into this serving and we are already receiving a bit of generic quite emo-ish hard rock. More importantly, the vocalist is decent enough when dropping his lines in regular manner. At times though he stretches his ability way beyond his possibilities and range and he comes out sounding like a chicken on a chokehold.  There is promise here, but Pure Soundart isn’t there yet. Their sound needs to gel and their songwriting needs to grow beyond the point where their admiration (for The Mars Volta) and their past (pure emo, and I can only assume) is all there is to talk about.
